This year is special.. we celebrated mid-autumn at soon to be ah gong, ah ma- in- law place.
We sprung a surprise at them last week over the idea of eating together on mid-autumn with a mini mooncake buffet!! Guess what… they were game for it!!
Thank you ah ma, ah gong!!!
We decided to go against tradition (well.. just the flavours of the mooncakes hehe) since they would already have the traditional ones already.
So after work.. off we go to Vivocity for mooncake shopping. BOY… was it chaotic… and the reason… they were slashing the prices since it’s the last day of sales. Some booths were even giving 1 box free with every box purchased.
After 1 round of careful inspection we decided to go with
1) Teochew Flaky puff yam mooncakes
2) Four Seasons Mao Shan Wang Durian mooncakes
We intended to get d24 but they were all sold out… so guess we were left with no choice 😦
**Word of advice.. you can get good deals on the last day of these fairs but selection very limited so go early!! 😀 **
Off we went to ah ma ah gong house… and as we were driving past their house.. we saw a string of lanterns nicely lined up by their window.
Wow!!! Now it got me real excited.. ah ma and ah gong spared no efforts in making this possible. They’ve even done up the place to invite children and grandchildren home!!! They are truly the sweetest couple I’ve known to date.. totally adore their grandchildren 🙂
Here’s what ah gong did…
So pretty isn’t it!! I’ve never had such celebrations at home.. and have always wished for 1.. thanks for making this happen baby 😀
And here he is.. heehee .. helping to light up some lanterns
And once again.. we were treated to a sumptuous spread for dinner. Ah gong went chinatown market to get crayfish for my baby.. his fav.. and ah ma cooked both our favorite vegetables (broccoli – me; cauliflower – luv). Of cz future mum-in-law cooked the most yummilicious curry .. oh man.. really good!! And future papa-in-law bought famous roast meat from his workplace I think.. I feel so loved!!!
Thank you everyone!!!!
After dinner.. silly me asked the elders to sit by the lanterns and *POSE * 😀
Here’s my lovely future ah gong ah ma in-law
Of cz my darling’s doting parents 😀
After that ginormous meal.. an ant’s appetite remained for the mooncakes.. so there goes the mooncake buffet 😦
Here’s the ‘spread’ : Huge pomelo.. Big China mooncake, yam mooncake, four seasons MSW mooncake. Not forgetting chinese tea to down the mooncakes!
Overall, the yam mooncake was well received by all. It was really good after we warmed it up for abt 5 min in the oven.. yam was smooth and not overly sweet, very fragrant indeed (my first time eating this – and I must say.. it’s a nice change to tradition – YUMMY!! ) Pastry is a tad thick.. otherwise.. thumbs up!
Now for four seasons mao shan wang durian mooncakes, this was well received by baby’s cousin. But I didn’t think it was really good.. it tasted better at the booth than the ones we have at home and we followed their instructions on thawing as well.
Here’s the review…
the snowskin was too mushy.. like really mushy and squishy. You don’t even have to bite, disintegrates to the slightest pressure.
The durian filling is good but it was difficult to cut and hold, basically it gets mashed up rather easily, losing it’s shape and worse..potentially losing it totally *you might just accidentally drop it*
Interestingly, the inner filling (the middle portion) is still hard and icy while those nearer the snowskin is already flowing/sliding off to the side. Overall not that satisfying..
That said.. it was a truly enjoyable mid autumn celebration.. a warm and fuzzy feeling as my baby will often say 😀
And how can we forget the juicy plump pomelo!!
A sweet ending indeed!
